“I need to come up with something for my paid subscribers as an offering of gratitude for their patronage. I’ve had a lot of ideas but none that seemed great upon reflection. Perhaps something new will occur to me soon.”
I’ve seen several Substackers I have a paid subscription to say something similar, and my response (never posted until now) has always been—I don’t pay for what you’ll do for me, I pay for what you’re doing, period. Keep doing that, in whatever way seems best to you.
As a non-paying subscriber (Sixty bucks here, eighty bucks there, sooner or later that would cut into my beer money! Actually I brew my own but barley doesn't grow on trees you know!) I suggest perhaps you might consider putting a 'buy me coffee' button on your page , skinflints like me sometimes hit those even if we don't buy subscriptions.
One thing I need as my oldest homeschooled son has hit 10 is a history curriculum that is thorough and edifying, unlike the soul destroying textbooks I had to read as a kid.
Of my kids who have learned to read the oldest is 10,
Second oldest is 8, and third is 5.
The two oldest can read and understand most anything within reason, but it is hard to find stuff not dumbed down that doesn't have more "spicy" tidbits in history. They will learn that stuff, but need to be a little older.
See if you can find old "Cornerstones of Freedom" books. All my kids loved those and re-read them several times. Some of them are better for age 10 than age 5. Also, the publisher "Ladybird" (UK based) has several history series that my kids enjoyed.
Congratulations, your success is so well deserved. I have truly enjoyed your writing and your humor. More good things are in store for you, and I am eager to see how that unfolds.
For what it’s worth, I’d have you on my podcasts in a heartbeat, it would be an honor to share the mic with you.
Slavery is the inability to be able to exercise one's freewill, and being forced to listen to one's employer whether one likes to or not for 8 hours a day. Shaping your soul and will to theirs.
Congrats on the freedom to move on if you wish, and the desire not to for now.
Thanks for this surprising insight on work-life balance. This is something I struggle with finding a balance to often. Humility and faith and letting go factor into the equation surprisingly more than I'd ever realized. Something I'm discovering now. Congratulations and enjoy the nectar of the cows.
"Do you work to live, or live to work? There’s a paradox in the parable. You can do one or the other, but I’d say you’re only really free, and only really successful, when you can choose to do either and both when called upon. Can you grind yourself like axe blade on a stone, indifferent to comfort or ease? Can you endure hunger and poverty and embarrassment for your ideals? More importantly, can you tell when it’s time to do one and not the other? Can you balance temperance and justice, and wisdom and fortitude? And most important of all, have you set your eyes on faith, hope, and charity, having worked out your salvation in fear and trembling, that you might enjoy the peace that passes understanding?"
Congratulations! Keep doing what you are good at, most readers support writers because they appreciate their work and do not expect any extras. All the best!
I always knew your insights were worth their weight in silver, now you have proper confirmation! Enjoy the whole milk mate, I have decided to properly support you by buying a subscription at the end of the month when I receive my salary, keep up the good work.
Very well-deserved , I'm very grateful you don't paywall your content (I'm stone broke and even if I wasn't there comes a point where "just the price of a cup of coffee" means you not only can't afford to drink coffee anymore but have to walk everywhere to afford the 50th £5/month fee).
Congrats! Genuine question - Does writing on your phone impact your style? I find you to be a very controlled and composed writer. Do you think that's because writing on the phone is harder and forces you to be more deliberate? I know that, personally, whenever I write on my laptop I find it easier to ramble since my fingers can move so quickly.

Librarian,
Thank you for your work.
what I have read from you is ranked amongst the most edifying, original and erudite writing out there.
Not only for the style, but the sheer depth, intensity and profound intellectual honesty of it all...
You are giving back to teaching the nobility it always had. “Vous rendez aux professeurs leurs lettres de Noblesses”
May this wind in your sails alleviate a bit of the tedious rowing of life, and crown your vocation in the eyes of those you love.
Thank you very much.

Of course you are a Bestseller! Any doubts were swept away long ago. Thank you and keep at it.
I’m grateful.

Thank you very much.
The crown jewel here is the milk. It actually conveys a great deal.

I wouldn’t say it makes a difference. Plus, some start one way and end the other.
Good to see that you drink whole milk. Skimmed / semi-skimmed was one of those fads that unfortunately took hold.
YES! Fresh full-fat milk is the best. We found some after moving to Kentucky. I had given up milk for probably 10 years.
